Space-based solar power (SBSP) proposes generating renewable energy in space using large solar-powered satellites and transmitting that energy to Earth via microwave beams. Recent advances in launch capabilities, robotic assembly and space infrastructure have renewed interest in SBSP as a potential contributor to future low-carbon energy systems.

This Specialist Discussion Meeting will explore the scientific challenges and opportunities associated with the concept, with particular focus on the space environment, ionospheric impacts, space weather resilience, and implications for astronomy. Bringing together astronomers, geophysicists, engineers and industry stakeholders, the meeting will examine the feasibility of SBSP, its potential effects on astronomical observations, and the broader scientific questions that this emerging technology raises.
